Challenges
Reduce the huge infrastructure cost of managing 75K+ connected field devices
Solution
- Developed Wi-Fi adapter using Spring Boot that can handle 8K+ concurrent devices on AWS EC2
- Defined new architecture and optimized the source code of the new solution to operate with lighter infrastructure
- Implemented analytics on a cloud to show the details of the connected device
- Introduced load balancer for auto-scaling to increase/reduce the number of servers required as per run-time load
- Increased the number of threads support by changing the value of threads and file descriptors on OS (Linux 18.04)
- Increased data fetching frequency from field devices to Wi-Fi adapter from 2 and 3 minutes to 3 seconds, making processing 60 times faster
- Addressed device disconnection issue by using MQTT
Outcomes
- Reduced infrastructure cost by 70% after reducing cloud server utilization from 80 to 15 servers
- Integration of analytics has helped to detect real-time fault in the system
